Fort Worth, TX – May 26, 2025 – Ben Griffin etched his name into golf history on Sunday, clinching his first individual PGA Tour victory at the 2025 Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial Country Club. The North Carolina native, fresh off a team win at the Zurich Classic, outlasted a talented field to claim the $1.71 million top prize and a fully restored 1992 Schwab Defender, a signature perk for the champion.
The final round promised a tight battle, with Griffin and Matti Schmid, both chasing their first solo PGA Tour titles, leading the pack at 13-under after three rounds. Griffin wasted no time, kickstarting Sunday with an eagle on the first hole and a birdie on the second, building a three-shot cushion. Despite a few hiccups on the front nine that gave Schmid and Tommy Fleetwood a chance to close in, Griffin held his nerve, finishing at 12-under to edge out Schmid by one stroke.
“This one feels unreal,” Griffin said, beaming after his round. “I saw some chatter online last night, and it lit a fire under me. I just wanted to go out and show I could get it done on my own.” His win earned him 500 FedEx Cup points, a major boost for his season, plus spots in next year’s biggest tournaments.
Schmid, the 27-year-old German, fought hard but settled for second at 11-under, pocketing $1.035 million—his biggest career payday. Bud Cauley took third at 9-under, earning $655,500, while Tommy Fleetwood and World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler tied for fourth at 8-under, each taking home $427,500. Scheffler, a local favorite, started slow but made a Saturday push, only to fall short of a Sunday charge. Rickie Fowler, four shots back to start the final round, stumbled early and finished tied for 16th, earning $144,875.
The Charles Schwab Challenge, a Fort Worth tradition since 1946, drew a 135-player field to the iconic Hogan’s Alley, known for its tight fairways and demanding greens. Beyond the hefty purse, players competed for critical FedEx Cup points and the chance to don the tournament’s signature tartan plaid jacket. The event, held May 19-25, lived up to its reputation as a test of skill and grit.
A determined final round secured Griffin his first individual PGA Tour victory.
