MIDDLETOWN, Del - A large fire destroyed an outing pavilion building at the Back Creek Golf Club in Middletown, Delaware on Wednesday afternoon.

Flames and thick black smoke could be seen billowing from the structure when firefighters first arrived on the scene.

A building at a golf course in Delaware is destroyed after a fire.

Former Eagles quarterback and current Back Creek Golf Club manager Ron Jaworski witnessed the fire and assisted in alerting authorities. He said thankfully the building that was engulfed was currently vacant and no injuries were reported.

Firefighters from neighboring fire departments including Newark, Smyrna, Townsend, Christiana, Odessa, Port Penn, Middletown, Delaware City, New Castle, Delaware State Fire Marshal's Office, and the New Castle County EMS all responded to battle the massive blaze. It took emergency crews over an hour to bring the fire under control.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the State Fire Marshal's office and New Castle County police. Significant damage was done to the large wooden pavilion structure, which was a gathering place for golf outings and events at the club.

Jaworski released a statement praising first responders for their quick action and expressing sadness over the unexpected loss but gratefulness that no one was hurt. He announced that the club's grille restaurant would be closed on Thursday June 20th and a one-year anniversary concert scheduled for that evening has been postponed as a result of the fire. Golf operations will continue as normal.

Full statement released by Ron Jaworski:

"Earlier today, we experienced a large structural fire to our outing pavilion. First and foremost, we are fortunate that no one was injured but we are saddened by the unexpected event.

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the first responders who acted promptly and effectively during this incident. Their professionalism and bravery were instrumental in ensuring the safety of all individuals involved as well as preventing further spread of the fire. Thank you to the firefighters from Newark, Smyrna, Townsend, Christiana, Odessa, Port Penn, Middletown, Delaware City, New Castle, Delaware State Fire Marshal's Office, and the New Castle County EMS

Our team has begun to take all necessary measures to ensure that our operations continue smoothly tomorrow.

The Grille will be closed tomorrow, June 20th and our one-year anniversary concert will be postponed. However, golf operations will go on according to schedule.

We appreciate your understanding and support during this time."

The investigation into a cause is ongoing. Any details on damage estimates or plans to rebuild the pavilion have yet to be revealed. We will provide updates as more information becomes available.
