Rocket Mortgage Classic to Honor Defending Champion Rickie Fowler with Signature Sandwich

The Rocket Mortgage Classic has announced plans to continue its tradition of creating a special concession item to honor the previous year's champion. For the 2024 edition of the tournament, taking place this week at Detroit Golf Club, defending champion Rickie Fowler will have a sandwich named in his honor available for fans to enjoy.

It has become a tradition for the Rocket Mortgage Classic, now in its fourth year, to pay tribute to the most recent winner by working with the champion to develop an exclusive food or drink available at concessions. Last year, Tony Finau, who won in 2022, was commemorated with "Finau Fitu".

This year, organizers worked directly with Fowler and his wife Allison to create "Rick's Pick", described as a signature sandwich that reflects the golfer's personal tastes. According to Chef Colin John of tournament caterer Forte Belanger, the sandwich consists of Cajun boiled turkey, shredded lettuce, dill pickle chips, pepperoncini peppers, mayonnaise, and a blend of vinegar, olive oil and oregano on a brioche bun.

"So we worked with your wife, Allison, and your team to create what we call the Rick's Pick," Colin John said. "It's on a brioche bun with Boar's Head Cajun turkey with shredded lettuce, pickles, pepperoncinis, mayonnaise, and then it has vinegar, oil and oregano on it as well. So not crazy, we didn't want to overthink it, so I know sandwiches are one of your favorite foods. So dig in, let us know what you think."

Fowler expressed his appreciation for the recognition, saying the creation closely mirrored his regular lunch order. "I appreciate it. This is one of my standard kind of go-to orders for lunch back home whether it's at the course or a local sandwich shop. Hopefully fans here will be able to enjoy it a little bit."

Fowler, who snapped a four-year victory drought by winning the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic, will defend his title this week at Detroit Golf Club. Tournament organizers hope "Rick's Pick" will be a hit with fans, allowing them to feel more connected to last year's champion while enjoying the concessions. The sandwich provides another unique way for the Rocket Mortgage Classic to engage patrons and celebrate the tournament's history at the same time.

Play begins bright and early on Thursday as Fowler tees it up, aiming to become the event's first multiple winner. But even if he doesn't repeat, his legacy will live on through the sandwich that now bears his name.
